Specially formulated for dogs weighing less than 10 pounds, Advantage II is a monthly topical treatment for the elimination of fleas and lice. This medication is EPA-approved and safe for pets and humans, while lethal to fleas within 12 hours of the first application. Its active ingredients are imidadoprid and pyriproxyfen, which attack the fleas, quickly killing them, and thus preventing eggs from hatching and continuing the reproduction cycle. This eliminates the danger of repeat infestations. Each package contains four treatments, enough to keep your dog free of fleas and lice for four months. Fleas are not only annoying — they can also cause disease. The most common malady is an allergic reaction caused by the flea's saliva, known as flea allergy dermatitis. This results in itchiness, swelling and respiratory problems. There is also a danger of internal parasites known as tapeworms, or less commonly, dipetalonemareconditum, which is a worm that lives beneath the dog's skin. How it works:
The first active ingredient is imidacloprid, which acts on the nervous system of the flea to cause paralysis and subsequent death. Within 12 hours of application, 98-100 percent of fleas are dead. The second active ingredient, pyriproxyfen, is an insect growth regulator. Once a female flea lays her eggs, pyriproxyfen works to prevent the eggs from hatching, ending the flea life cycle.
